My name is Hans-Georg Bertenbreiter. A German national, I have been living for many years in South America, and and working for almost ten years now as a  hypno and symbol therapist. My professional career has experienced several quite significant shifts so that it is to be depicted only insufficiently by the term „career changes“. I am convinced there is a subtle but significant “line of sense” in it.

After High School, I studied Catholic Theology at the University of Munich until I was caught by the so-called Theology of Liberation, very popular in the 1980s, and drawn to South America. I continued my studies at the Catholic University of Santiago de Chile, finishing them in 1991 as “Egresado.

In consequence of a divorce and the resulting (not entirely voluntary) rupture with the Catholic Church, I sought other spiritual experiences, especially in Buddhism, but also esoteric currents.

In Ecuador, I took a study course in Applied Anthropology at Quito’s Salesian University , which I completed with the degree of Licentiate. My dissertation dealt with “the Symbolic Deficit in Hypnotherapy”, as – while studying anthropology – I became very interested in regressions and possible earlier lives, and decided to undergo a three-year training in Werner Meinhold’s H.I.T.T.-Therapy (most important form of hypnotherapy both in Germany and Ecuador). I must, nevertheless, confess that even today, I have not achieved a final judgment concerning the “reality” (what is that, to begin with?) of earlier lives and the meaning of such experiences under hypnosis. Not satisfied with both the H.I.T.T. method and its results, I quite intensively delved into Milton Erickson’s form of hypnotherapy.

Soon after starting to work as a hypnotherapist, I picked a three-year-long training as therapist in Jungian Depth Psychology and the Initiatic Therapy by Durckheim. In this, I knew Daniel Surkow, an initiatic psychotherapist who, inspired by Hermann Hesse‘s “Glass Bead Game”, had developed a ludic form of therapy with symbols, which – as we got to know only much later – features some similarities with Dora Kalff’s Sand Therapy.

Currently, this ludic “Therapy of Symbols” represents my most important treatment method, within a synthesis of hypnosis and Jungian depth psychology.
